Wondering if it’s really possible to make money from home? Or not only make money from home, but make enough that you can quit your job, pay your bills, go on vacations, or even allow your husband to quit his job too?
I know, I know. This sounds like it’s too good to be true. I thought that too for a long time. But I can tell you with my whole heart that it’s possible. I did it! And you can too. Even if you’re a single parent or the primary breadwinner in your home.
So how exactly did I make money from home? Let’s start at the beginning.
I became a mom in 2015 and always wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. I couldn’t bear the thought of being away from my kids. But it just wasn’t in the cards for my family. We had o find a way to pay the bills and that meant I had to work.
I found a job that allowed me to work part time which worked for a while, but after having my second baby, they offered me a promotion and full-time position. It was just too good to pass up for our family. We needed it! So I accepted.
This is where my true unhappiness started. I was packing up my 2-year-old and baby every day and taking them to an overcrowded home daycare. They cried at drop off and I was told that my baby wasn’t getting any sleep. He came home every day with purple under his eyes from a lack of sleep. He wasn’t hitting his milestones and I knew deep down that it was because he wasn’t with me. Meanwhile at work, I’m working full time while trying to squeeze in pumping sessions so that I could continue to breastfeed my baby. Try as I might, my supply was slacking because I couldn’t sneak away to pump enough.
Needless to say, something had to change.
I had been researching ways to work from home and tried it all! I never found anything that truly worked for me and my family. It started to seem impossible.
However, something that I kept seeing information on was offering an online service as a freelancer and getting clients that will pay you to do it. This seemed crazy. I thought I had no skills and the idea of finding clients was terrifying to me. It took me a while to come around to the idea.
But I did come around. I was desperate to find something that worked and when I fully dedicated my time to figuring it out, it changed my life.
While I originally intended to become a general virtual assistant, I quickly realized that Pinterest Management was a service that was in demand and I did have the skills. I niched down, went into the Facebook groups where potential clients were hanging out, networked, shared what I do, and found my first client within a couple of months.
It was amazing! I couldn’t believe I was doing this on my own.
Things took off from there. I learned how to find clients and they started rolling in. Within 6 months of getting my first client, I grew my freelance business and I was making over $6,000 per month.
I couldn’t believe life could be that good. I left my job (even though I was terrified!) and never looked back.
So how did I start to make money from home? Here’s a simple breakdown of the steps I took
- Identified a service I wanted to offer
- Determined how much money I would charge for that service
- Made a simple portfolio to share with potential clients
- Joined Facebook groups where my ideal clients were hanging out
- Networked, made friends, go to know people, offered my services where appropriate
- Got on calls to meet people face-to-face via Zoom before deciding to work together
- Sent a simple contract and invoice for my services
- Started working!
The rest is history. I know these steps may seem overwhelming, but once you get into it, it becomes second nature and you will get into a flow. I promise!
So I’m here to tell you, if I could do this, you absolutely can too. I still feel like I need to pinch myself to make sure this is really my life. I love what I do and I get to be home with my little ones whenever they need me. Our bills are paid, we go on at least 2 vacations a year, and we are happy!
Now this isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme. This is real, honest work! But I promise it works.

- Little to no start-up costs. No inventory to pay for, no physical location to pay for, no expensive equipment. You just need yourself, your laptop, and some determination to succeed.
- You can start making money fast. Once I started getting serious about getting clients, they started flying through the door.
- It’s stable. In a traditional job, you rely on one employer for all of your income. With freelancing, there are several people paying you per month. So even if you lose a client for whatever reason, you don’t lose all of your income because you have other clients paying you.
- It’s growing. Now more than ever, businesses are hiring freelancers. Why? Because it is more convenient and less expensive for them! They don’t have to pay for all of the additional things that employers usually cover for employees. They just pay you your set rate and that’s it. They are searching for qualified and reliable freelancers every day!
- You’re in control. You make your own dream job. How cool is that?! You decide your hours, your rates, who you work with, what you do, what you specialize in, when you take vacation, how many days per week you work, and how much money you make. Your freelance business is yours to create.
